Mónica Maria Lopes de Sequeira Amaral Ferreira

Researcher

Mónica Amaral Ferreira is a Ph.D. in Territorial Engineering and Researcher at IST, ICIST. She has 12 years of exposure to the field of seismic risk assessment and disaster mitigation. Since 2004 her role has involved working with partner organisations (at a national and international level), focusing on risk assessment, urban interdependencies, cascade effects, risk awareness, risk mitigation, including disaster prevention education activities in schools. She has been involved in several EU funded projects in these fields. In the last six years she has integrated several post-earthquake field missions in Portugal, China, Japan, Italy, Spain and Haiti, assessing building damage, interviewing survivors of the events and understanding the urban earthquake risk problems, which contributed to the development of the concept of the urban Disruption index (urban interdependencies and cascade effects). Mónica has been involved with the development of the “Treme-Treme” serious game being an opportunity to provide educational skills on earthquake response and mitigation. She was also involved on the production of an educational film “Before it’s too late”.
